AUS: Warm over most of the continent

This season's warm autumn continues, with almost the entire continent experiencing above average daytime temperatures. The map at right shows that only five tiny coastal pockets in WA and QLD recorded slightly below average maxima today, while the bulk of the continent basked in temperatures 4 to 12C above the May average. Minima were also generally above average, reaching their greatest anomaly in the southeastern quarter of WA where Warburton's low of 23.4 was 13.2 above normal. Warburton went on to set a new May maximum temperature record of 34.1.

The warmth on a continental scale is explained by the synoptic chart above which shows the whole of Australia under the influence of a strong high SE of Sydney. Winds everywhere are from the east or north. Similar situations through April resulted in a positive pressure anomaly in the southern Tasman of 7hPa for the month as a whole, and help explain the unusually warm autumn across most of the continent.

WA: Rain eases

Moisture continued to feed from the northwest into a trough that is slowly traversing southern WA today giving variable rain to the entire state SW of a line from about Onslow to Esperance. There were scattered heavy falls about the South West, Central Wheatbelt and western Goldfields, much of which fell yesterday. Badgingarra, 200km N of Perth, topped the list with 54.0mm. Today, scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms gave some heavy falls in the Goldfields and along the SE coast, with Esperance recording 26mm between 3 and 9pm and Salmon Gums to the north 14.4mm in just one hour to 8pm.

QLD: Windy and wet in the SE

A small low that developed off the Sunshine Coast overnight brought some heavy showers and strong winds onshore. The coastal low was shortlived, but its effects were replaced by a developing low in the Coral Sea during the afternoon, and a strong gradient continued to push showers and strong winds onto the SE coast. Double Island Point recorded a gust of 96km/h and Cape Moreton 87km/h during the early morning, and strong to gale force winds continued through the day. Heavy showers hugging the coast gave Maroochydore 30mm between midday and 3pm.
