NSW,
QLD:
Rain continues on coast, spreads inland
Rain, heavy in places, continued along the east coast south of Cairns today,
while moderate falls overnight in southern inland QLD spread south into northern
NSW during the day. Rain over this huge area is being generated by moist northeasterlies
feeding into a surface trough lying through central QLD and NSW, over which
an upper low and colder air are providing uplift by causing instability and
convergence.
Heaviest falls to 9am were on the QLD Gold Coast and the NSW North Coast.
Miami on the Gold Coast recorded 75.6mm, while in NSW Mullumbimby registered
54.0 and Murwillumbah 53.0mm. The QLD Darling Downs and Maranoa also received
good falls, with a broad band from Mitchell to Goondiwindi recording between
25 and 50mm. Top falls were 48.2 at Mt Driven 50km E of
St George and 45.0 at The Deep Crossing, 90km WSW of Dalby. On the Central
Coast, significant winter rain fell in the Pioneer Valley around Mackay, Dalrymple
Heights notching up 40.0mm and East Mackay 26.0. This rain area spread inland
as far as the Burdekin Dam which received 31.0mm.
During the day, coastal rain continued, intensifying on the NSW North Coast
late afternoon. Evans Head received 65mm between midday and midnight, Ballina
Airport 52mm 3pm to midnight and Cape Byron 43mm
3pm to 9pm. The inland
rain area
moved
south
into the NSW Upper Darling and North West Plains,
Bourke receiving

between

Storm dumps heavy hail in SW QLD
A thunderstorm, one of many active across southern QLD overnight, dumped around
5cm of "half pea-sized" hail on a small area of Nooyeah Downs, 25km
W of Thargomindah. The 2km square area, completely covered by what looked like
snow,
was discovered this morning by the grazier on a flight over his property. When
he subsequently walked into the area he found that heavy rain had washed hail
into drifts 60 to 75cm deep in gullies. The precipitation from the storm was
particularly isolated, with no daily reporting rainfall stations in Far SW
QLD recording any rain in the 24 hours to 9am today. |
