NSW: Torrential localised rain on North Coast

A convergence line supported by a sharp upper trough intersected the North Coast around Byron Bay about 8pm Thursday and continued to give heavy showers in an area bounded by Byron Bay, Evans Head and Tabulam until this evening. Lines of torrential showers moved westwards along the near-stationary convergence line which itself was oriented east/west. From shortly before midnight to around 9am, Ballina lay underneath the axis of the convergence line. A procession of torrential showers gave the airport 140mm between midnight and 9am, of which 85mm fell in the 2 hours to 2am. Lismore town and Alstonville both registered 74.4mm for the 24 hours to 9am. Further heavy, but relatively lighter, showers fell in the area late afternoon.

QLD: Welcome rain on Central Coast

Moderate showers brought needed rain to the Central Coast and immediate hinterland today. After heavy rains in January, the area recorded only 10 to 50mm during February and even less in March. The Mackay area received 40 to 50mm in the 24 hours to 9am with a further 33mm at the airport up to midday. There were general lighter falls the length of the east QLD coast.

AUS: Heat returns to the south

As the maps at right show, very warm conditions for April returned to much of the continent again today. Overnight minima were 6 to 10 above average over large parts of QLD, NSW and SA, while maxima were 8 to 13 over the norm across most of SA and parts of WA, NSW and VIC.
