NEWSBITS

The tropics are looking decidedly summery for the end of September. A raft of centres today reported maximum temperatures around 40C across WA, NT and QLD (see actual temperatures map). Seven stations came within a degree of their record high September maxima: Daly Waters, McArthur River Mine and Brunette Downs in the NT, and Mt Isa, Georgetown, Richmond and Injune in QLD. The Georgetown and Richmond figures are significant as both stations have 111 years of climatic observations and missed their records of 39.5 and 40.1 by only 0.8 and 0.6C respectively.

Windy, showery weather continues in SW WA which has seen 17 cold fronts this month. Wind this morning gusted to 111km/h at Cape Leeuwin and 83km/h at Manjimup, Mandurah and Albany. Cape Leeuwin reported gale force average wind speeds at all observations from 3am to 6pm.
