NSW, VIC: Cold morning in sheltered areas

As the minimum temperature anomaly map at right shows, it was a cool start to the day across most of SE AUS in the wake of yesterday's change. While alpine stations recorded some characteristically low readings (Thredbo Top Station -4.1, Mt Hotham -3.6), it was sheltered low-level stations that provided the surprises. Mangalore Airport, 15km NNE of Seymour, recorded its lowest March minimum in 46 years with a reading of 1.5. Farther west, Redesdale, 35km SE of Bendigo, recorded 1.9, while in NE VIC Corryong's low of 3.0 was just 0.6 short if its 31-year record. In NSW Batemans Bay equalled its previous 14-year March low of 6.0. Cooma's town station recorded zero, 8.1 down on normal, while Canberra Airport's 2.7 was 8.0 below -- at both locations, minima this low occur about every second or third year, but usually towards the end of the month.
