SE AUS: Cold change brings wintry weather

A front sweeping across southeastern states this morning gave strong to gale force winds from southern NSW southwards and produced a cool to cold day. Highest wind gusts were at alpine stations, Thredbo Top Station recording 137km/h and Mt Hotham 131 during the early morning hours. Gales were reported from most coastal locations in TAS and VIC. Light to moderate snow continued in the Alps, building the snow depth at Kosciuszko Chalet to 161cm at 9am. The cold air cumulus field behind the front gave hail showers to the Riverina and VIC North Country, a wintry thunderstorm to Wonthaggi VIC and snow with a top temperature of 3.0C on the TAS Central Plateau at Liawenee. A 5-minute hail storm covered the ground at Katandra West, 20km NE of Shepparton.
