SE AUS: Widespread rain, heavy in NE VIC

A cloudband visible in the satellite image above moved across SA early yesterday then slowly across VIC and western NSW overnight before dying out over SE NSW this afternoon. The rainfall map at right shows it gave a broad area of light to moderate rain with some moderate to heavy totals in NE VIC. Between 20 and 60mm was recorded in the Ovens, King, Kiewa and Mitta Mitta catchments prompting the issue of flood watches, but only low-level flooding eventuated. The highest totals in VIC were Whitfield 50.0mm, Myrhee 49.8 and Harrietville 48.8. There were some good totals in SW NSW, including Trida 26.4, Jerilderie 25.2, Ivanhoe PO 23.8, and 23.0 at Tocumwal Airport, Hay CSIRO and Hillston Airport. In SA, where most of the rain fell yesterday, heaviest totals were in the Adelaide Hills and included Cherryville 38.6, Athelstone 37.0 and Valley View 35.6. In TAS, the passage of a small low across the northeast overnight gave the Launceston suburb of Trevallyn 20.8mm, though other falls in the northeast were 15mm or less.

Newsbits

TAS, VIC: Windy as second front crosses: The second cold front visible on the surface chart above swept across TAS and Bass Strait this evening, while a gaggle of lows around 973hPa to the south of TAS tightened the pressure gradient across the area. Top wind gusts and AWS reports show that Maatsuyker Island had a particularly boisterous time with a top gust of 131km/h around 11pm and a 24-hour average of 69.8km/h to 9am Sunday. Scotts Peak Dam on the exposed southern shore of Lake Pedder in the South West reported a gust of 115km/h.
