QLD: Flood report

While rain in NW QLD has eased, some 30 roads remain flooded and Burketown and Doomadgee are cut off. The situation river by river today:

  • Flinders: peaked at Richmond early this morning at 6.5m, half a metre above moderate flood level. Minor to moderate flooding moving into the lower Flinders later in the week.
  • Cloncurry: now below minor flood level at Cloncurry, with minor to moderate flooding moving to the lower Cloncurry.
  • Georgina: peaked at Urandangi at 3.85m at 6am yesterday, with minor to moderate flooding moving to the Glenormiston area today.
  • Burke: main floodwaters passed through Boulia on Saturday; minor to moderate flooding is moving towards Marion Downs this week.
  • Daimantina: moderate flooding has been reported around Elderslie in the upper reaches of the river.
  • Thomson: minor flooding reported above Longreach.

WA, SA: Heat moves east

Hot northwesterly winds produced a broad band of temperatures ranging from 42 to over 45C from NW WA to the SA coast around the Bight today. Marble Bar and Leinster (300km N of Kalgoorlie) topped out at 45.5, while coastal places in SA showed the greatest variations from normal: Eucla's 44.9 was 19.1 above, Nullarbor Roadhouse's 44.0 was 16.1 above and Ceduna's 41.8 was up on average 13.3.

NSW: Cold night on the tablelands

The remains of the recent cold spell in central and eastern AUS lingered on along the NSW Tablelands this morning, with Glen Innes Ag Research Station equalling its lowest January minimum of 6.0C in 33 years of record. Coldest places shown below included a -3.0 at Charlotte Pass in the Snowy Mountains, and a low for mid-summer reading of 14.8 at Alice Springs.

TAS: Grass fires widespread

Continuing warm dry weather led to 33 grass fires across the state today.
