SA, NSW: Cold night sets new November records

With a cool, dry southern airmass established over SE AUS and a high pressure system sitting directly over SA, overnight minima plummeted to record levels in parts of the state and in SW NSW. Nonning, 120km WNW of Whyalla in the Gawler Ranges, recorded a low of 0.6, 11.9 below the average November minimum and a new monthly record for the site, which has 36 years of computerised records. Hillston Airport in SW NSW recorded a low of 2.0, down 11.6 on normal, and its lowest November figure in nearly half a century.

NEWSBITS

Westerly weather returned to TAS today with heavy rain on the West Coast and storm force wind gusts at exposed coastal and mountain locations. Strathgordon recorded 51.2mm and Mt Read 51.0 in the 24 hours to 9am while the top wind gusts were 109km/h at Cape Grim and 107km/h atop Mt Wellington. Hogan Island in Bass Strait, just 50km ESE of Wilsons Promontory but legally part of TAS, recorded a top gust of 111km/h and an average windspeed for the 24 hours to 9am of 67.4km/h.

Thunderstorms with the trough that moved through NSW and QLD yesterday degenerated into rain areas overnight as the trough crossed the QLD coast around dawn. Some of these still packed a punch, however, with the AWS at Williamson RAAF Base, 70km ESE of St Lawrence on the Central Coast, recording 52.4mm between 5 and 7am.
