AUS: Widespread heat continues and intensifies in SE WA

As the maps at right show, hot conditions continued over a large part of the continent today with southeastern WA again entering record-breaking territory as air circulating around the high over VIC swung hot, dry northerlies over the region. Norseman recorded its hottest April day in 48 years with a top of 37.0 while Warburton's high of 39.2 knocked up the record set there on 1 April this year by a further 0.2°. Eyre's top of 39.1 was 15.3 above average. Scattered thunderstorms in the WA Goldfields gave falls up to 15mm and a wind gust of 87km/h at Kalgoorlie/Boulder Airport. In SA, the Country Fire Service has extended the fire danger season in most of the south of the state until the end of April because of the continued hot, dry conditions.

QLD: Torrential rain on far northern CYP

An upper circulation off Cape York Peninsula coupled with very high moisture levels produced torrential rain around Thursday Island overnight. Horn Island, 8km east of Thursday Island, recorded 81mm between 3 and 6am for a 24-hour to 9am total of 139.8. Bamaga on the nearby mainland registered a 24-hour fall of 173.0mm while Thursday Island itself recorded 105.4mm.
