WA: Hot in the SE

Maximum temperatures topped 42° through a large slice of central and southern WA today, with the greatest departures from normal in a broad band from Kalgoorlie south to Esperance. Kalgoorlie-Boulder Airport scored the nation's top temperature of 44.5, closely followed by Norseman on 44.2, Leinster on 44.1 and Leonora on 44.0. Esperance, with 41.5, was 15.3 above the average.

WA: Rain and humidity cause blackouts in Perth

Rain and humidity reacting with a build up of ash and soot on powerlines caused blackouts for 12,000 Perth properties late this evening. The conditions were similar to those of 30 January, when the buildup of soot and ash from the mid-January bushfires east of Perth combined with moisture to increase conductivity and cause pole arcing and pole-top fires. The southern Perth suburbs of Scarborough, Karrinyup, Welshpool, Kewdale and Medina were the worst affected, and many properties were without power throughout the night.
