WA: Heavy rain continues in the NW

A deepening upper trough off the WA west coast continued to bring heavy rain to the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions in the northwest. Cardabia, on the coast 100km SSW of Learmonth, recorded 106.0mm while Learmonth Airport registered 67.4mm. During the day, a surface low beneath the upper trough deepened and moved SW, sweeping very moist unstable air into Indian Ocean areas just off the WA coast. The edge of this airmass covered the Pilbara and Gascoyne, and extended south during the day to bring substantial falls as far south as Jurien. Onslow Airport recorded 40.0mm in 3 hours to midday, Barrow Island 45.4 in 3 hours to 4.30pm. Closer to Perth, Jurien Bay recorded 22mm and Badgingarra 28mm between 9am and 3pm.

TAS: High winds continue

A second front arriving on the TAS West Coast late this evening strengthening winds to storm force in exposed locations. Scotts Peak Dam, on the southern shore of Lake Pedder, recorded a wind gust of 146km/h around 9pm, unusually beating Maatsuyker Island which recorded a top gust of 135km/h at about the same time. Other high gusts were Mt Wellington 126, Mt Read 120, Hartz Mountain 117 and Strahan Aerodrome 94.
