VIC: Prefrontal winds cause damage in Melbourne

The cold front visible in the chart above sweeping across SA brought storm force northerly winds across VIC today causing widespread though mainly light damage across Melbourne. SES crews attended over 140 incidents in the 18 hours to 6pm, with 40 coming from the worst-hit area around Emerald in the Dandenongs where the wind gusted to 100km/h at Dunns Hill during the morning and again to 96km/h during the evening. Most calls were for trees downed on houses, cars and roads. Other high inland wind gusts were 100km/h at Kilmore Gap and 82 at Melbourne Airport.

Newsbits

SA: Windy as front approaches: SA was also whipped by strong winds that reached 115km/h at Cape Willoughby on Kangaroo Island. Many inland locations recording high wind gusts or average speeds are listed in Highest gusts and High AWS wind reports below.

AUS: Minimum temperature extremes across the nation: As the minimum temperature anomaly map at right shows, early morning minima varied widely across the continent today. In the east, minima were up to 9 below as clear skies and low humidity allowed temperatures to plummet in the remnants of last week's cold snap. The cold was most notable in north QLD where Croydon, Proserpine and Mt Isa were all around 9 below normal. Croydon's low of 6.4 was 0.9 above its 41 year record, while in northern inland NSW Brewarrina's minimum of -1.6 was just 0.5 off the station's 35 year record. In the west, however, northwesterlies swept warm air from northern WA into the east of the state and southern SA producing minima up to 8.5C above average.

WA: Weekend rainfall welcomed by farmers: While storms caused damage in Perth yesterday, the widespread rain and storm falls across the northern wheatbelt were welcomed by growers. The 10 to 20mm received over the weekend will significantly improve grain size and therefore crop yield. Falls were lower in the eastern wheatbelt and north midlands, though much of the South West recorded between 25 and 50mm.
