WA, NT, QLD: Monsoonal storms ease

Storms and showers from the monsoon trough lying north of the continent eased today after giving some isolated heavy totals overnight. Coconut Island, off Cape York, recorded 148mm and nearby Bamaga on the Peninsula 110mm for the 24 hours to 9am.

In the WA East Pilbara, squalls with an early afternoon storm gave Marble Bar Airport a wind gust of 114km/h, while 23mm fell with the storm.

NT, SA, QLD, NSW: Hot weather continues

High temperatures for March continue to be experienced in a broad band along the QLD/NSW border extending west along the NT/SA border. Territory Grape Farm, 140km N of Alice Springs, has equalled its March record maximum temperature of 40.0C twice so far this month -- today and on 1 March. Jervois, 400km NE of Alice Springs, got to 42.0 today. In QLD, Birdsville recorded a top of 42.3 and most locations in the state's southwest exceeded 40C. In NSW, Brewarrina top-scored with 41.0 followed by Bourke on 40.4. In SA, Oodnadatta recorded 40.3 and Moomba 40.0.

The hot, dry weather is having an unexpected benefit in western QLD. The Australian Plague Locust Commission, which is surveying the extent of locust populations in the Channel Country, Central West and Maranoa, says locust numbers have dropped as a result of recent control efforts and the dry conditions.
