QLD: Moderate rain across central areas pleases farmers

A rain area associated with the residue of cyclone Hervey brought general falls of 25 to 60mm to the western Gulf Country overnight and this morning, with Mt Isa Aero recording 87mm between 3am and noon. This rain area moved SE, then E into central QLD today, giving Trepell Airport, 160km NE of Boulia, 146mm in the 12 hours to 3pm and Winton PO 64mm in the 12 hours to 9pm. Rainfall totals in this area for the 24 hours to 9am Thursday, most of which fell today, included 109.0 at Jochmus (220km NE of Longreach), 104.2 at Ulcanbah (220km S of Charters Towers), 60 at Springsure, 53 and Emerald and 55.4 at Aramac. The rain was welcomed by farmers after the damage caused to crops by three weeks of hot, dry weather in the area.

WA: Short-lived cyclone fizzles

The central pressure of a tropical low about 600km N of Karratha briefly dipped into category 1 cyclone status about noon yesterday, and the low was christened TC Vivienne. The marginal cyclone weakened overnight and was downgraded to a tropical low around 6 this morning.
