NSW: Cold and wet in the north and east

A trough moving through NSW yesterday and this morning gave widespread light to moderate rain across the state's west, north and North Coast in the 24 hours to 9am, as shown in the rainfall map at right. Highest totals were on the Northern Tablelands where Walcha recorded 68.4mm, Woolbrook 64.6, Uralla 61.0 and Armidale Airport 59.4. At Guyra Hospital, the registration of 47.0mm was just 2.2 below the station's September record in the past 24 years.

Rain developed in the northern inland early yesterday afternoon and rapidly spread SE to the coast. During the evening, the rain area broadened to cover most of NE NSW, with an area of thunderstorms developing late evening on the Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes. These produced some heavy downpours as they moved slowly east during the early morning including 48mm between midnight and 6am at Armidale Airport, 25.8 of which fell between 1 and 3am. Other heavy 6-hour falls were Narrabri Airport 33 (9pm to 3am) and Gunnedah Airport 26, Tamworth Airport 30, Kempsey Airport 35 and Port Macquarie Airport 30mm (midnight to 6am).

The satellite image at 3am shows the dense cloudmass that brought the rain and storms. While this cleared the state during the morning, a band of low cloud persisted across the state from the Central Coast to eastern SA. This resulted in the band of well below average maximum temperatures shown on the maximum temperature anomaly map at right. Arkaroola in SA and Broken Hill, White Cliffs, Katoomba and Jerrys Plains in NSW all recorded maxima between 9 and 10C below average, Katoomba's top temperature only reaching 5.1C.
