SA, NSW, VIC, TAS: Cold and windy

An active cold front swept across SE AUS today bringing strong cold winds but very little precipitation. Winds were particularly strong for an hour or two either side of the front. Hogan Island (50km SE of Wilsons Promontory) recorded a 10-minute average speed of 111km/h with gusts to 132 just after 11pm while Cape Grim TAS had an average 117 gusting 128 just after 9pm. See Highest gusts and High AWS wind reports for details of other strong wind recordings. Only light snow was reported from the Alps, with a few flurries again on higher parts of the Central Tablelands.

VIC: Isolated heavy showers in E Gippsland

An area of heavy showers associated with the front mentioned above was picked up by East Sale radar crossing the Gippsland coast east of Orbost for a few hours around midnight this morning. Rainfall observations are sparse, but Point Hicks lighthouse recorded 54.4mm at its 6am observation for the period 3pm to 6am, and farther inland Cabbage Tree Creek recorded 22.4.

QLD: Warm area drifts north

The warm airmass that has covered much of the tropics over the past few days exited northwards today, giving Kowanyama on the western side of Cape York Peninsula its equal highest July maximum temperature, 35.0C, in 37 years of record.

Newsbits
NSW: Flooding peaks from QLD rain

A flood peak in the Warrego River passed through the tiny settlement of Fords Bridge in far northwestern NSW today, measuring 2.05m on the gauge at the bywash and bringing minor flooding. The mostly minor flooding in the Warrego originated from the rainy spell in central western QLD mid June.
