QLD: Hot again as bushfires continue

As the maps at right show, maximum temperatures were again 8 to 12C above average in a band across southern QLD today with a new record of 35.2 being set at Rainbow Beach (50km NE of Gympie). Amberley, near Ipswich, recorded a top of 39.9, 12.3 above average while the state's highest temperature was 42.1 at Birdsville. Fires in the Mitchelton/The Gap region NW of Brisbane continued to pose problems with 3 firefighting helicopters in use during the day. A fire in rugged country at Mt Binga (60km N of Toowoomba) also broke out during today as did a number of small fires across SE QLD.

SA: Strong winds, storms cause power problems

The low pressure system moving across SA in the surface chart above brought widespread thunderstorms and strong wind gusts as well as a rainband that gave 10 to 30mm of rain in a strip from the Eyre Peninsula east to the Murray Valley.

Lightning from some long-lived storms this morning knocked out power in the Upper Eyre Peninsula around Kimba and Elliston for up to 30 hours. Strong winds gusted to 91km/h at Woomera and Leigh Creek in the north and Roseworthy and Mt Crawford near Adelaide. Other strong gusts are listed below. Minlaton on Yorke Peninsula recorded the top rainfall of 30mm in the 24 hours to 9am, while Naracoorte in the southeast recorded 27mm in the 24 hours to 9am Saturday from rain that fell during the afternoon as the rainband moved east into VIC and southern NSW.

NEWSBITS

Central Australia experienced an exceptionally warm night in warm northwesterlies ahead of a trough. The Alice Springs minimum of 28.5 was 13.8 above the average.

By comparison, maxima across SW NSW and NW VIC were close to mid-winter norms as cloud and advancing rain held temperatures down. Many locations reported highs of between 10 and 12C, which is 10 to 12 below the October average.
