SA: Heat records fall

May high maximum temperature records fell at seven locations mostly in the Adelaide area today. The Bureau's Kent Town site in Adelaide recorded a top of 29.2, beating its previous 29-year record by 0.5C. The record May maximum at the old West Terrace site, which observed temperatures from 1887 to 1979, however was 32.3 in 1921. Edinburgh RAAF, the Turretfield Research Centre at Rosedale, Eudunda, Murray Bridge and Meningie all broke 30 to 40 year-long records, in some cases by a degree or more. In the north, Yongala had its hottest May day in nearly half a century of observations. Most of the southern third of the state recorded maxima 10 to 12 above average, and this followed a similarly warm night. Ceduna's temperature range, from 21.1 to 33.6 gave it the highest minimum and maximum temperature, relative to average, in the country.

Warm conditions for May continued across much of the rest of the nation. SE WA experienced an unusually warm night with minima 10 or 11 above average. Hobart's minimum and maximum were about 8.6 above normal, and Grove, south of Hobart, recorded a low of only 15.6, 11.4 above. See story for 5 MAY for more details of TAS heat.

WA: Rain continues in the northwest

Cloud streaming in from the Indian Ocean continues to give the Pilbara and areas farther south an unusually wet autumn. Onslow Airport recorded 33.2mm for the 24 hours to 9am, but 23.0 of that fell in a single hour to 3am. Further downpours delivered 40.0mm between 9am and 3pm. Barrow Island recorded 34.0mm between noon and 3pm. Urala, 35km WSW of Onslow, topped the national rainlist with 49.0mm to 9am after recording 58.8mm in the preceding 3 days.

Scattered heavy falls pushed well south into the Gascoyne and Murchison. Moderate totals reported to 9am Thursday included Mt Augustus (150km SW of Paraburdoo) 29.6 and Milly Milly (190km WNW of Meekatharra) 33.0mm.
