QLD: Torrential local rain on the Sunshine Coast

There were general moderate rainfalls of about 30 to 70mm on the Sunshine Coast from late yesterday afternoon to late this morning, but a small area around Maroochydore recorded totals between 100 and 169mm. Radar images and the rainfall distribution suggest that a small area of convergence developed in the southeasterlies in the Maroochydore/ Coolum area soon after midday yesterday, and stayed there until late this morning. The heaviest falls were coastal: Point Arkwright, 5km north of Maroochydore, recorded the highest total of 169.4mm, Maroochydore itself received 111.0mm and Coolum flood gauge, 2km north of Point Arkwright, reported 116mm for the 24 hours to 9am. Yandina Creek flood gauge, 7km inland and NW of Point Arkwright, reported 123mm, but falls tapered off rapidly around this triangular area. Point Arkwright gauge is read only at 9am, but at the other three gauges hourly data is available which indicates that rain fell fairly consistently through the 24 hours, apart from a lull during the early morning. Three hour totals between midday yesterday and midday today were:

to: 3pm 6pm 9pm 12am 3am 6am 9am noon
Maroochydore 6.4 31 15 16 4.4 2.4 34 15
Coolum 16 14 6.7 42 2.0 18 14 6.6

NSW: First autumn fogs running late

It is an indication of how summery this autumn has been that the first significant fogs for which the season is noted did not occur until today. The Sydney and Hunter basins both experienced thick fog this morning, with light rain at the weekend providing the moisture, and the light winds and stable conditions under a high centred to the east of Sydney providing textbook conditions for the development of radiation fog. In the lower Hunter, fog closed Williamtown Airport until late morning, causing the diversion of 5 arrivals to Lake Macquarie Airport and delaying 5 departures. At Maitland the fog did not lift until midday. In Sydney, fog began to form in the Nepean basin around midnight and drifted east on a land breeze, arriving at Homebush at 4am and Sydney Airport at 7am. It made an impressive sight moving down Sydney Harbour around 7 to 8am, engulfing the Bridge and city skyscrapers, but burned off rapidly around 9am.
