Newsbits

AUS: Warm across most of the continent: Much of the continent experienced a warm night followed by an even warmer day today as the temperature anomaly maps at right show. Top temperatures in the 40s have begun to appear in the far north over the past few days, with Fitzroy Crossing WA recording tops of 40.1 yesterday and 40.7 today. The heat low over northern WA, which is a permanent feature of summer charts, has made an appearance on the surface chart above, while a lazy trough system moving over southern states has transported tropical warmth, and moisture, southwards.

QLD: Controlled burn gets out of hand: A controlled burn on North Stradbroke Island east of Brisbane got out of control when it burnt into bushland near Point Lookout. Tourists were evacuated from the Keyhole Lake area and the nearby Fisherman's Road was closed
