QLD: Cyclone Hervey brings heavy rain to Gulf

A tropical low in the Gulf of Carpentaria built to cyclone strength overnight and gave heavy rain to coastal areas in the southeast of the Gulf today. Aurukun, 80km S of Weipa, recorded 160.4mm for the 24 hours to 9am, while torrential rain began falling at Mornington Island late evening with 89.4 measured in a little under 2 hours before midnight. By late evening, Hervey was down to 990hPa and moving SW towards the NT Gulf coast.

WA, SA: Area of heat moves east

Hot northerlies ahead of a cooler change brought maximum temperatures 8 to 15C above average to SA's West Coast and Eyre Peninsula today. Nullarbor Roadhouse was 15.1 up on normal with a maximum of 43.0 and Ceduna's 40.9 was 12.7 above. In WA, the cool change has not penetrated far inland, so that a broad band across central WA continued to experience temperatures in the low to mid 40s. Leinster, 330km NNW of Kalgoorlie, was the state's hottest spot with a top of 44.2.
