AUS: Heat continues to increase

Unseasonable winter warmth continued to build today with over half the continent experiencing maximum temperatures 6C or more above the norm. The minimum and maximum temperature anomaly maps at right are remarkable for the extent of the country covered by above to well above average temperatures, resulting from days of northerly winds circulating around the Tasman Sea high and drawing warm tropical air southwards. This airmass is stable and dry enough to prevent cloud formation, so solar radiation reaching the ground boosts day-time heating; however it carries enough humidity to retard night-time cooling so that minima have increased dramatically over the past few days.

Today, 35 of the Bureau's climatic stations across WA, NT, SA, NSW, ACT and VIC reported maxima within one degree of their record June highs. These included Darwin with 33.9 (record 34.5) and Melbourne Airport 18.8 (19.8). Streaky Bay SA broke its prevous June maximum in 48 years of observations by a significant 1.4C. Warburton WA, Yass and Griffith NSW and Tidbinbilla ACT all equalled previous or set new records.

QLD: Heavy showers in the far north

Moist onshore winds continue to build unusually high totals for this time of year along the Far North QLD and Peninsula coasts. On the Peninsula, Lockhart River recorded 56.0mm for the 24 hours to 9am bringing its total for the month so far to 74.2 -- the average for the whole of June is 42.4. Farther south, Paluma in the ranges NW of Townsville reported 40.0mm.

For the week to 9am 7 June, the highest totals in the area were Tully Sugar Mill 159.2, Daradgee 145.0, Babinda PO 143.0 and Innisfail 138.4.

WA: Further showers and thunderstorms

Wet weather continued across much of WA today with thunderstorms and showers generated by an inland trough and an advancing cold front that crossed the South West late this afternoon. Heavy falls included 22.0mm in about 1 hour to midday at Geraldton, 6.4 of which fell in two minutes. Others are listed in downpours and more details are in the report for 7 JUN.
