QLD, NT: Cyclone Hervey fizzles over NT coast

Tropical Cyclone Hervey intensified rapidly overnight to category 3 with a central pressure of 965hPa. It continued on a generally southwesterly track, and crossed the NT coast in sparsely inhabited country just west of the NT/QLD border between 5 and 6pm, after which it rapidly weakened. A compact cyclone, it appears to have caused very little weather of note for a category 3.

Mornington Island recorded 158mm between 9 last night and 1.15 this morning, after which the rain abruptly ceased. Kiana station, 130km S of Borroloola, was reported in the press as receiving 200mm. Pungalina station, 130km SE of Borroloola and about 40km inland from the Gulf, was in the track of the cyclone. Station manager Owen Davies told Northern Territory News that wind gusts stronger than 100km/h hit the homestead just before midnight and the cyclone dumped 60mm of rain in a few hours. Some tree damage was reported close to the coast in the border area and around Borroloola.

AUS: Hot day across most of the continent

Maximum temperatures exceeded 36C across most of the continent today (see the actual temperatures link at right) with a large area exceeding 40C. The greatest departures from normal were along the VIC Gippsland coast where 35.3 at Lakes Entrance was 11.4 above normal. In QLD, it was exceptionally hot in central eastern areas. Brigalow Research Station, 85km SW of Biloela, recorded its hottest February day in 36 years of record with a top of 40.9.

VIC: Flooding subsides

All VIC rivers were below minor flood level and falling today. The last peak of note occurred on the Goulburn River at Shepparton this morning, with the river peaking at 8.4m (0.9m below minor flood level) at 6am, its highest level since 2000.
