AUS: A cold start to the day

Minimum temperatures were well below normal across most of the continent today with the eastern states in particular still feeling the effects of the mid-week cold outbreak. Charlotte Pass reported -16.5, by far its lowest minimum so far this winter; nearby Perisher Valley reported -10.0 and Thredbo Top Station -7.5. Despite its name, the Charlotte Pass weather station is situated in the valley below the pass, which, at 1755m, is among the highest valley floors in the nation and therefore able to produce the lowest temperatures during calm nights with clear skies.

Minima were also well below normal in southern VIC and on the QLD Central Coast. Phillip Island Penguin Reserve, just back from the coast, recorded their lowest June minimum in 18 years with a reading of -1.5, while Moorabbin Airport (-0.7), Essendon Airport (-1.3) and Laverton RAAF (-1.1) were all about 7C below average. Frost was also reported on Flinders Island where the airport registered a low of 0.2. In QLD, Mackay Airport's minimum of 4.8 was 7.7 below the norm while frost-level temperatures (2.0 and lower) were general across the Central Highlands and Granite Belt -- Monto, Injune and Stanthorpe all reported 1.0C.
