NSW: Unusually localised downpour hits Newcastle

An unusually heavy, localised downpour developed suddenly in Newcastle's southern suburbs around 8pm this evening, then maintained intensity as it drifted very slowly NE over then next 7 hours when it just as suddenly dissipated. Nobbys Signal Station, only a kilometre east of the CBD, recorded 81mm in less than six hours between 9pm and 3am Saturday, of which 43mm fell between 9.00 and 10.30pm. Totals for the 24 hours to 9am at surrounding stations give some idea of how localised the event was: Newcastle University (10km WNW) 18.8, Blacksmiths (22km SW) 1.0, and Williamtown (16km NNE) 5.2.

The Bureau's surface charts (above) show that there was a weak, slow-moving trough just south of the area at the time, but diagnostic charts show that an area of moderate instability lying from the North Coast to the Hunter intersected a narrow band of moisture that extended from the South Island of New Zealand to the NSW Central Coast. These, coupled with local low-level convergence, seem to be responsible for the heavy rain, and a generally stagnant airmass accounts for the slow movement.
