Noteworthy weather today
significant newsworthy major

Seasonal heavy rain associated with the monsoon trough fell across the NT Top End and WA Kimberley today and is detailed in Wettest and Downpours below. Of significance was 97mm in 6 hours to 6am recorded at Central Arnhem Plateau, 75km SSE of Jabiru.

SA, NSW: Heat continues

A trough lying through northern SA and central NSW continued to drag hot though light northerlies into the two states today. Top temperatures in SA were 46.1 at Marree, 45.8 at Oodnadatta and 44.8 at Andamooka. In NSW, 45.7 was the top at Wilcannia Aerodrome, with White Cliffs, Menindee and Ivanhoe all recording 45C or higher. The highest maximum temperature departures above average were on the NSW Tablelands. Bowral's 37.8 was 12.6 up on normal while 35.3 at Katoomba was up 12.2.

WA: Widepread dust

A tightening pressure gradient between a 1001hPa heat low in central WA and a strengthening ridge along the south coast caused wind strong enough to raise dust in many southern and central areas. Balgair, 400km E of Kalgoorlie, reported a mid-afternoon duststorm with visibility down to 900m.

VIC: Bushfires continue

A fire that started in farmland south of Longwood, between Seymour and Euroa, burnt through 29ha and engaged 80 firefighters, 19 tankers and a fire-bombing helicopter before it was contained. It was on a course into the rugged foothills of the Strathbogie Range when stopped, and would have posed significant problems if it had run into the bushland.

The major fire north of Balmoral in the state's west continued -- see report for 11 January.
