QLD, NSW: Heavy storms in SE QLD, NE NSW

A near-stationary trough gave thunderstorms, hail and some heavy rainfall to the NSW Mid North and North Coasts, and SE QLD this afternoon and evening. The storms developed over the NSW Northern Tablelands from east of Armidale to Tenterfield around noon and extended east and a little to the north during the afternoon before firing up across SE QLD and the Darling Downs during the late afternoon and evening. Damaging hail was reported from Grantham (25km E of Toowoomba) where horticultural crops and shadehouses were shredded. Hail was also reported from Kingaroy. Only a few millimetres of rain was reported at most places, but there were some notable exceptions.

The heaviest rain fell from Nambucca to the coast east of Grafton where Minnie Waters topscored with 64.0mm for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday. Other heavy falls in NSW from the official network included Nimbin PO 49.2 and Dorrigo 45.6. Heavy flood network gaugings in the Bellinger Valley were 64mm at Crystal Creek (30mm of which fell between 6 and 7pm) and 50 at Gleniffer (36mm between 5 and 7pm). Shephards Lane near Coffs Harbour recorded 48mm (25mm between 6 and 7pm). 36mm was reported at Nimbin between 3 and 4pm.

In QLD, there was a press report, attributed to the Bureau of Meteorology, of a fall of 76mm "near Allora", which is 50km S of Toowoomba. However, the highest reports for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday on either the flood or official networks were 39mm at Bracken Ridge Reservoir (15km N of Brisbane CBD) and 38.0mm at Baroon Pocket Dam (10km SW of Gympie).

WA: Cold and windy in the south

Cold, damp and windy weather returned to southern WA today in the wake of a strong cold front. Albany's 3pm temperature was only 8C with 14mm falling from a succession of hail-bearing thunderstorms between 9am and 3pm. Wind gusted to 107km/h at Cape Leeuwin around midday, and 91 at Forrest and 85 at Norseman during the afternoon. Much farther north, Carnarvon was unusually the windiest place in the nation with a wind run of 1458km for the 24 hours to 9am Wednesday, an average speed of 60.8km/h.

NEWSBITS

Lord Howe Island "heatwave". Temperatures on Lord Howe Island, out in the Tasman Sea 600km E of Port Macquarie, don't vary much. Airmasses are greatly modified as they pass across hundreds of kilometres of water; the island's September mean maximum temperature is 19.9, but the highest and lowest on record in 17 years at the new airport have been only 23.3 and 15.6. So the maximum temperatures of 22.6 yesterday and 22.7 today constitute something of an early season heatwave for the island. Minima have been close to record territory, too. The September record is 19.9, and the minima yesterday and today were 18.9 and 19.3.
