WA: Heat records fall as fire flares in Perth

Hot weather contracted north from the southern WA coast today as the effects of a weak SE change gave the area some respite. However, the trough down the west coast continued to drag hot northeasterlies across areas as far south as Perth, breaking some long-standing maximum temperature records in the process. All time highs were set in the Central West at Morawa with a recording of 47.4 and Mullewa with 46.5. A little farther south, new February records were set at Carnamah with 47.2 and, 175km N of Perth, Badgingarra Research Station recorded 46.0. All these stations have between 34 and 46 years of record.

Perth itself recorded a top of 42.1 at the airport, and humidity was down to 15% during the late afternoon in fresh easterly winds. A fire, believed to have been deliberately lit, burnt through 190ha of the Araluen Country Club Estate near Roleystone, 30km SE of Perth CBD. It, and a smaller fire lit nearby, were contained on Wednesday after threatening houses.
