NSW: Rain and storms bring widespread useful falls

Widespread light to moderate rain fell from a large cloudmass that crossed most of NSW overnight and today ahead of a broad, slow-moving trough. With the exception of northern coastal areas, falls were generally between 5 and 15mm across the state. The best falls of 10 to 20mm were in the Riverina, Central West and Central Coast. Top registrations were 18.0mm at Oberon, 17.4 at Richmond and 16.0 at Orange Ag Station.

Thunderstorms developed late this morning in the clear air behind the cloudmass along a line from the northern Riverina to around Bourke, then moved eastwards during the afternoon and evening. Falls from the storms were generally light, but Quandialla, 60km NW of Young, recorded 27mm between 9am and 3pm while 18mm fell in an hour at Moss Vale and 13mm in an hour at Condobolin. Hail was reported at Cootamundra.

Newsbits

AUS: High temperatures continue: Minimum temperatures were 10 to 12 above average over much of southern inland QLD this morning as yesterday's warm conditions were trapped under a blanket of cloud. Charleville's low of 21.4 was 11.7 above the September norm, while Quilpie's 22.5 was just 1 degree below its mid-summer average. As the minimum temperature anomaly map at right shows, warm nights were again the rule across most of the continent.

While extreme maximum temperatures were not as widespread as yesterday, some high figures for September were reported from the WA West Kimberley. Curtin Airport, 35km S of Derby recorded a top of 41.5 while Derby Airport reported 40.7, just 0.7C shy of their 20-year September record. On the other side of Australia, Lord Howe Island's minimum of 18.9 and maximum of 22.6 were both close to September records.
