QLD, NSW: Bushfires flare in record heat

Temperatures 10 to 14 above average set new October records across NE NSW and SE QLD, with numerous bushfires breaking out during the day.

In SE QLD, Archerfield Airport (10km S of Brisbane) recorded its highest October temperature in 27 years of record with a top of 39.4, some 2.2C above the previous high. Nearby Logan City's 36.2 was also a new record. Bushfires broke out late morning and early afternoon at The Gap and Mitchelton (10km WNW of Brisbane), Bundamba and Swanbank (W and S of Ipswich) and Waruman (10km WNW of Caboolture). The Gap fire threatened homes and closed roads before two water-bombing helicopters and five firefighting crews brought it under control.

In NE NSW, Murwillumbah's maximum temperature of 38.2 was 1.1C above its previous 29-year record. Ballina Airport also recorded its hottest September day with a reading of 37.0. A major fire burnt through about 375 hectares of private property on the Gwydir Highway about 15km west of Grafton before being contained. Other fires flared in the Tweed Valley at Byrrill Creek (20km SW of Murwillumbah) and Fingal Head (10km SE of Tweed Heads) burning through 43 and 132ha. Over 130 firefighters worked to contain the blazes. Major fires continued to burn on the Northern Tablelands. One, in Guy Fawkes National Park SE of Glen Innes has burnt through about 965ha and another nearby at Sara River has burnt through 500ha.

TAS: Wild wintry weather continues

Gale to storm force winds with gusts to hurricane force lashed TAS as another cold front swept across the state during the afternoon. Snow was reported from the Central Plateau and higher country on the West Coast -- Mt Read, just inland from Zeehan, recorded 40mm between noon and 9pm which, with the temperature hovering around 1C, would mostly have fallen as snow. Very high wind gusts were reported from exposed coastal and mountain weather stations. Maatsuyker Island's top gust was an eye-popping 150km/h recorded around 6am. The lighthouse station reported 10-minute average winds of 117 and 115km/h at its 9am and noon observations. Other high gusts were 137km/h atop Mt Wellington, 117 at Cape Grim and Scotts Peak Dam, and 115 at Tasman Island, Mt Read and Hogan Island. High gusts reported from normally sheltered locations included Sheffield 102, Tunnack 96, and Devonport, Smithton and Liawenee 91km/h. While 90km/h is the speed at which damage normally starts to be sustained, there were no press reports of damage or dislocation from the wind.

NEWSBITS

A small low moving across southern WA brought cool showery weather and a few thunderstorms. Most of the national top rainfalls for the 24 hours to 9am were in the South West, topped by 44.0mm at Dwellingup. Rain moved east during the day giving Jacup in the southern Central Wheatbelt a substantial 53mm between 3am and noon. However, most falls were considerably less. Maximum temperatures under the thick cloud cover were up to 10C below average, Esperance only reaching 11C and Lake Grace 12.
