Rainfall for the 24 hours to 9am today (above) and Monday (below). Almost all the rain in both periods fell during today.

SA: Heavy rain from Eyre Peninsula to Murray Valley

The broad trough and cloudmass over SA shown on the charts above delivered very useful rain across much of the Eyre Peninsula overnight, then moved eastwards during the day to produce the rain pattern shown in the charts at left. Moist air feeding down from the Kimberley region of WA curled eastwards underneath the developing low in NE SA during the day. While there were scattered thunderstorms embedded in the rain area, most of the rain fell without storm activity.

In the 24 hours to 9 this morning, Ceduna's total of 44.2mm was the highest September one-day total in airport's 67-year climatic record. 35mm fell between midnight and 6am. Other good totals in the NW Eyre Peninsula were Nundroo 38.2, Wirrulla 36.0, Yardea 34.6 and Penong 29.2. The timing of the rain was welcomed by wheat farmers across the peninsula, where crops have made head, and are ready for rain to fill out.

Rain moved across Spencer Gulf and the Mt Lofty Ranges into the Murray Valley during the day, clearing the state by late evening. Totals for the 24 hours to 9am Monday included 28mm at Port Pirie, 22 at Gluepot Reserve 70km NW of Renmark, and 20mm at Clare.
