NSW, QLD: Widespread storms bring heavy rain

Rainfall gaugings across southern QLD and northern NSW for the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, though most of the rain fell from storms and following rain today. The red dot for Mt Kilcoy Weir in SE QLD is an error.

Thunderstorms were widespread across the northern half of NSW and southern parts of QLD today. A line of storms developed shortly after dawn from about Tamworth NSW to far SW QLD along a line of middle atmosphere moisture embedded in a broader area of instability, shown as a troughline on the surface charts above. The area of storms broadened and moved ENE during the remainder of the day giving some heavy bursts of rain (see downpours). Some notable falls were 25.2mm in an hour at Trangie, 37.4mm in 49 minutes at Narrabri and 46.2mm in 2 hours at Armidale Airport. The storms petered out over SE QLD during the early hours of Sunday morning.

The detailed rain gauging maps at left show that many locations received more than 25mm with several dozen recording over 50mm in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday. The highest totals were unusually widely spread with 92.4mm at Lawrence Road on the NSW North Coast, 88.4 at Ellangowan on the QLD Darling Downs, 75.8 at Tambar Springs in the NSW NW Slopes and 72.6 at Kindee Bridge on the NSW Mid North Coast (see Sunday's Wettest for more details).

Storm falls of 75 to 100mm were reported by farmers across the Darling Downs and Lockyer Valley, stopping the grain harvest. Flooded fields are likely to impact on grain quality with some growers reporting up to 25mm of water covering unharvest grain in their fields.

NEWSBITS

As the temperature anomaly maps show, hot weather extended east into SA today with temperatures reaching 39.0C at Nullarbor, 13.5 above normal, and many places on the Eyre Peninsula reporting top temperatures 10C or more above average. Eucla, just across the border in WA, reported a top of 40.6, 16.8 up on the norm after an overnight minimum that was 10.7 above.

Colder southwesterlies spread across southern WA, keeping maxima 6 to 8 below the November average and spawning some gusty thunderstorms with or ahead of the front. Forrest and Norseman in the southeast reported wind gusts of 107 and 100km/h respectively.

Overnight thunderstorms gave some heavy rainfall SW of Alice Springs. Curtin Springs reported 37.0mm for the 24 hours to 9am, just 4.7mm shy of the station's 50-year November record.
